We are a collection of people who have real joys, struggles and brokenness just like you. We also realize that we are all in need of life change that only God can bring.
At Cornerstone, you can investigate a relationship with God at your own pace and without pressure.
To really get to know us, we invite you to join us for a worship service on a Sunday morning.
The Bible is also important to us. We believe it is relevant to all areas of life and gives the guidelines for connecting with God and for living life to the fullest. We aim to help people put its teachings to work in daily life. Our goal is to mobilize members to minister to others wherever they are, not to build a ministry around church meetings (or buildings).
We believe “life to life” relationships are an integral part of God’s plan for discipleship, so much of the spiritual growth, ministry, and direction in our church body happens organically. There are opportunities to connect in homes, cafes, parks, and wherever relationships happen.
These goals reflect our Mission and Vision Statements.
Cornerstone Vision Statement:
We are a group of Christ followers who are being shaped by personally walking with Jesus, being in His Word, being united with His people and serving the community, and as a result we are being equipped to give our lives to build bridges to those God puts around us to bring them closer to Christ.
Cornerstone Mission Statement:
To know, love and glorify God and be used by Him to help unchurched people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ
Our aim is to love one another. People are very important to us and as a result, love is very practical for us. We love by treating all people by a set of values we call the Cornerstone Relational Values. These values are basically attitudes that are just like any tool, employed habitually they will build healthy lives. We hope you consider applying them to your life!
Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Ephesians 4:25 “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”
We develop honest and open authentic relationships
We are easily self-deceived and so we open ourselves up to the input of others.
Hebrews 3:12-13
Matthew 5:23-24 “Therefore if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.”
I Peter 4:10 “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.
Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
We recognize that all of our resources belong to God. We know that God has been generous to us, and we gratefully give back to God
Hebrews 13:17 “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.
There is only one true living God who is creator and ruler of the universe. He is spirit and has eternally existed in three persons (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). He is holy, loving, merciful and good. (Deut 6:4; Gen. 1:1-3, 26-31; Psalm 59:17; Luke 18:19; 1 Tim 22:37-38)
He is the eternal Son of God and co-equal with the Father. He is co-equal with the Father and was miraculously conceived and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of all human beings. He rose from the dead to demonstrate his power over sin and death and appeared and was recognized by his disciples and over 500 witnesses. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, but will return someday to rule as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (John 1:1; Gen. 1:1; Matt 1:18-2:23; 2 Cor 5:21; 1 Pet 3:18)
He is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He exists to enable human beings to understand truth and their personal need for Jesus Christ. Upon acceptance of who Christ is, the Holy Spirit comes to live in every believer, giving them a spiritual gift(s) and empowering them to do the will of God. (Rom 15:30; 2 Pet 1:20-21; John 14:26; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor 6:19; John16:7-14)
Written by human authors, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, it is the source of God’s truth and sole authority for faith and practice. (2 Tim 3:16-17)
It is a gift from God offered to all people, but each person must decide to receive it or not. This gift is the only way to salvation. We cannot earn this by human effort. It is found only when we let go of our self-ruled lives and turn to Jesus Christ in faith. (Eph 2:8-9; Acts 4:12; 1 Pet 3:18; John 3:16; Luke 9:23. Acts 2:21)
We are created in the image of God which means we are spiritual beings with a soul. We were also created to have a personal relationship with God. Yet, we have chosen to go our own way, rule our own lives and as a result have broken relationship with God. This is what the Bible calls sin. We are destined to die in this state and live eternally separated from God. We are helpless in ourselves to change this state through our good works. We need to be forgiven by God for going our own way in order to have a relationship with God and to be with Him in Heaven. (Gen 1:26-31; Gen 1:31; John 3:16, Rom 3:23, Rom 6:23, Heb 9:27; Eph 2:8,9; Acts 10:43)
There is one true universal church made up of all who acknowledge Jesus Christ as their savior. Believers are commanded by Scripture to regularly gather, to devote themselves to worship, prayer, teaching the Word and fellowship. The only ordinances observed are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Believers are equipped and developed to serve the needs of the body as well as reach out to the world. The local church occurs whenever God’s people meet in obedience to this command. Members are to work together in love and unity, under the watch care and guidance of the appropriate leadership, with the ultimate purpose of glorifying Christ (Matt16:13-18; Acts 2:42-47; Eph 4:11-13; Rom 12:4-8; Col 1:17,18; 1 Cor 12:12-31)
Seven families came together in January, 1996 under the leadership of Dana Hayden to begin Cornerstone Baptist Church, a church plant from Centreville Baptist Church. We have met in various places (business complex, movie theater, school) and have participated in many forms of ministry (BMX bike and skateboard events, pumpkin parties, Mexico mission trips, Habitat for Humanity).
Our second pastor, Mike Poff, was called to Cornerstone in September, 2005 and has continued to move forward the mission to reach out to unchurched people and invite them to consider the life changing power of Jesus Christ.
Cornerstone was designed from the beginning to meet people where they are by creating worship services with a relaxed atmosphere, contemporary music and practical, relevant messages.
Beyond Sunday mornings, Cornerstone has various small group opportunities that help folks build up their faith. To help people who want to be more intentional, there are multiple training opportunities with Horizon, Northstar Leadership Training and Mentoring.
Community has always been a key value for Cornerstone. And as a result, local ministries have always been important. We have engaged with Young Life, Habitat for Humanity and Angel Tree over the years. More recently, we have reached out to our community by creating and sponsoring The Well Run Race, Feed Fauquier and Cornerstone Cares. Beyond Fauquier County, Cornerstone has sent mission teams to Bland County Virginia, Mexico and El Salvador.
